The Story
Early in the evening off the coast of Alaska, Herynn, a female orca and matriarch of her pod, is escorted by two smaller males. The orcas enter a shallow cove deep enough to swim and dive. A few hours pass and Herynn gives birth to her third calf — a newborn she names Okent.
Mother and newborn are only together a few hours before danger approaches. She hides Okent among the kelp and faces off the predators. Panicked and separated, Okent becomes lost in the open ocean.
He's found by a great humpback named Babel, who protects him and eventually adopts him into her pod. Two seasons later, still not fully accepted among the humpbacks, Okent sets out on his own and meets Hue, an albino humpback tangled in fishing nets. Okent frees him, and the two — an orca and a humpback — become travel companions, developing their own way of communicating and surviving the ocean's hardships together. They discover that the greatest threat to sea life isn't below the surface, but above it.
